What a daring and unusual plot of a film that seems to bend towards a typical 'Chinese crime film', but never actually comes to that. The film ends by focusing on two police officers who are more tangled with their love lives than with street crime.

I thought both parts were good and on the same level. Both funny and playful. The one who is hopelessly looking for love, the other who simply does not see it. It is a charming film with excellent camera use, flashy and tender. Particularly attractive too. Busy Hong Kong, like the minds of the two unfortunates, is disturbed and chaotic.

Not that I really liked it all, but it has been a nice viewing experience. Fascinating enough with a great soundtrack here and there, but it's not a masterpiece or the cult status it gets to me. Just fine and that's good enough.

If you mainly know Wong Kar-wai from his later films, this takes some getting used to. It's an MTV version of his movies, but he was also a bit younger. Visually the weather is wonderful, but I miss the dreamy of eg In the mood for love or My Blueberry Nights. Chungking Express is a two-part film and actually I'm only part of the film from the 2nd part. But even if it is a bit more distant (that's how I experience it anyway), this is quite a creative film where enough happens. The man has clearly grown over the years.
