Distinctive and intriguing Chinese drama film about the lives of four concubines (wives) of the wealthy Chen. The title is telling, I've never seen so many red lanterns, with a very accompanying ritual every day. Cinematography: nice soft colours, a lot of orange/red because of the lanterns, beautiful scenes and backgrounds, the weather changes of the seasons. Four different homes of the four concubines, nicely matching the four-season movie format. Music: singing and whistling in pronounced Chinese sounds. Actresses play their roles convincingly, actor who plays Chen barely appears.

Plot consists of the struggle between the four women (Yuru, Zhouyoun, Meishan and Songlian) to win the favors of their mutual partner Chen. A real power struggle, consisting of a lot of venom, pranks and excuses...... Special foot massage with those hammers! I recognized Gong Li from Zhou Yu's train, a beautiful actress. Many traditional rules and rituals apply in the household, which must be adhered to. Eventually, the atmosphere becomes increasingly grim and various secrets surface with far-reaching consequences. It can only end badly.....

A beautiful pearl of a film, scored last Wednesday at the thrift shop for 1,50 euros........

Really great movie from Zhang. I hesitated for a while between Flodder in America and this one, and luckily I didn't have the madness to go for that other film

This drama about the concubinage and the age-old traditions surrounding it is strongly performed and sheds light on what otherwise goes on behind closed walls. That is why it is also a very captivating film that has never bored me. Within the nobleman's house, a strong hierarchy emerges, with the concubines competing for the master's favors. Giving birth to an offspring, preferably male, is the ultimate reward for them. Then they are highly regarded and that is what matters: social standing, because the concubines themselves usually come from impoverished families. The existence of the maids has hardly any meaning and has the most to do with slavery. There is no further doubt that the women are equally the property of their master, and that breaking the house rules can have dire consequences for them too.

Zhang knows how to bring it all very strong : the passing of the seasons, the closed world within the walls of a large mansion, the red lanterns that are hung, the click of the foot massages, the lackeys who run the house and on top of that the vicious and hypocritical intercourse between the women. It's all visually tip-top in order and sticks pleasantly. A movie you must see.

Superb Chinese film about the life of a feudal lord who has four wives, actually a fifth, if you include the maid he also hooks up with. This busy man sleeps with one of his wives every day and show this by decorating the lady's house with red lanterns.

What is first and foremost striking is the beautiful decor and beautiful atmosphere setting (costume, music, setting, ...). The buildings look very stylistic, but also drab and gray, just like the existence of the women as other servants in the film. Only the red lanterns bring some hope, interest and literally some color into the lives of the women. Furthermore, a nice successful insertion with the seasons so that in addition to the advancing time, the country house also looked different every time. Visually a pearl of a film! It is also striking that we never get a close-up of the master himself.

The plot is also very intriguing with the rivalry and jealousy to get the attention of the master is great. No one is left out and it's no wonder this would escalate sooner or later. The film also clearly grows towards this climax. Top notch! Really enjoyed it and rightfully chiseled firmly into the top 250. Only minus maybe the eldest son with which nothing was done in the plot, pointless character, too bad.
