Well, a rather mediocre prequel. Quite stand alone in itself touches the later X-Men films, but nowhere does it reach the level of part 1 & 2. Qualitatively it is rather reminiscent of "The Last Stand..." which I already take a step back. Too bad because uberchagrin Wolverine deserved a mega cool movie, but unfortunately.

I often find it rather illogical and uninteresting, especially from a story-technical point of view. It starts out promising, the opening sequence in which we see the mutated brothers go through all the wars from the American independence struggle to Vietnam is well done. Potentially there are some cool mutants in it but they get too little to do and all are only half done. Even with the role of Sabretooth, who is played with verve by Liev Schreiber, far too little happens.
The special effects are also often so-so and actually quite cliché. I wonder where the budget would have gone? Although the last fight with Weapon XI on the cooling tower was okay.

Had expected more from this and that was certainly the case with the troubled relationship between the brothers. Extra kudos for Wolverine's lovely wife

2.5*

A Wolverine solo film... I wasn't really looking forward to it, because I don't find his character very fascinating and Hugh Jackman's portrayal is adequate but nowhere charismatic, and at the beginning I was also afraid that the whole movie would be one extended mano-a-mano fight between Jackman's shirt and Liev Schreiber's pig eyes, but luckily some nice other mutants and subplots are also introduced. The film isn't entirely free of clichés (the semi-insane human experimenting doctor, the love you can already feel is too idyllic to survive, Stryker's reaction when the general announces that he's wants to cut funding, the drug to make someone look dead) and the scene with Blob in the boxing ring (Kevin Durand in a Mr Creosote-fat suit) is completely out of the loop in terms of corniness. show, but the action sequences (the raid on the tower in Lagos, the fight between Gambit and Wolverine) are tasty, Ryan Reynolds and Taylor Kitsch are welcome appearances, and Kayla's role is intriguing. I still find the fights between the brothers rather uninteresting (always those claws that have no lasting effect), and because their conflict is quite central in the film, it weighs heavily, but all in all this is quite a reasonable prequel .

Guess Stryker finally figured out how to shut you up.

Not exactly working on everything related to the X-MEN in chronological order, and I can remember seeing this film twelve years ago in a fairly old cinema in Leeuwarden, and at one point saw a mouse roaming down the aisle, like that' a detail that Jennoot forgets again.

But back to the film, Wolverine to be precise, by far the most appealing character in the X-MEN series and of course something that every enthusiast looks forward to. Wolverine, its origins, violence, many well-known figures from the series... it's nice, but a top film that can compete for the top places in the series certainly does not do X-MEN Origin and that has one reason; namely the script. Apart from arguing with brother dear who ensures that he goes into business with Stryker in the first place, it is also brother who ensures that Logan returns to the scene of the disaster. In that sense, the plot and the reason for applying the Adamantium can be called rather meager if you ask me.

Nevertheless, X-MEN Origin is more than entertaining. The history of the brothers summarized in images, a plethora of well-known characters with Deadpool, The Blob and of course Sabretooth. Then there is finally Gambit, a loss during the series, which is barely redeemed with this short performance. It's incomprehensible that this character hasn't been released before. The humor is fine, just like the spectacle, the course of Sabretooth is very nicely done and Schreiber is a very good cast besides Jackman.

It makes Origin a fun and, above all, entertaining film. But not a contender of X2, First Class or Days Of Future Past, and actually I would be inclined to give a 3.0, but then the nostalgia and love for the X-MEN speaks. Therefore a 3.5.
