"One city, three stories tall"
Triptych made by three great New York directors. They are three separate stories that have nothing in common, except that they are all set in New York. Scorsese's story is about a macho painter and his pupil or girlfriend. Coppola made an adaptation of the children's book 'Eloise', about a girl that was much too spoiled. Finally, Woody Allen: his short film is about a man who can't get away from his meddling mother.

Nice film with three different films by three famous directors, the only similarity being that it takes place in New York. The first film is the most successful film-wise with beautiful camera work and good acting. The last film is the best, perhaps because Woody Allen remains closest to the rest of his oeuvre.

Francis Ford Coppola: 2.5 stars

life lessons (Martin Scorsese): genius! Beautiful symbiosis of soundtrack and image, how he captures that obsession with a painting in progress with the camera is masterful. Close ups, moving camera, editing... beautiful camera work. The chaos of art (colours mixed) to represent the chaos in the head. A sequel to the fantastic After Hours, that's how you can see it. Art in NY but less surreal, more dark emotions such as jealousy, people's customs, hurting, humiliating, arguments. nice interplay between Arquette and Nolte too.

Life without zoe (Francis Ford Coppola): Mediocre. Although a dull story, there is a rich visual look from Storario in photography to create that fairytale atmosphere (golden yellow) and a very beautiful sequence in the Ali baba scene. It is remarkable that Sofia wrote a script (and costumes and generic) and there are parallels with her work: girl lonely, isolated, rich environment, more mature than adult, independent, magical. As if Sofia was allowed to practice on daddy's lap.

Oeidipus wreck (Woody Allen) : Nice. Woody Allen in a typical character of a neurotic, insecure idiot with (also typical of Allen) more love problems than all the characters combined in Thuis. Still, 1 genius idea (mother disappears by magic trick and returns as a kind of guardian angel) so that the film is indeed funny and entertaining with many witty one liners.

You naturally expect a lot more when you see names like Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Francis Ford Coppola on the cover of a single film. Perhaps it was a kind of cinematic rest stop for them and to recharge their creativity, but nevertheless, only Allen comes up with a funny, thought-out segment. Scorsese and Coppola disappoint.
Life Lessons (2.0*). Nicely conceived and at times attractively depicted, but the interaction between Nick Nolte and Rosanna Arquette is completely ineffective. Nolte acts too theatrically and Arquette simply acts poorly, so the chemistry never comes across properly. Now that is an element that this segment has to be made with, which means that a significant part of it falls into the water.
Life Without Zoë (2.0*). Coppola's segment starts off cute and cheerful, with a young cast doing quite a nice job. Naturally, the inexperience ensures that the comedic side of the cast members does not catch on, but that is quickly forgivable with such an innocent event. The disadvantage is that it takes far too long and has nothing substantive to say. The main theme barely catches on, so the relatively short playing time proved to be quite a challenge.
Oedipus Wrecks (3.5*). Allen's neurotic acting is infectious in films that are somewhat shorter. The longer it goes on, the more tiring it becomes for me. That's why it's nice that this segment only lasts 40 minutes and the direction is smoothly put together. It is outdated on certain visual points, but it nevertheless looks very comical and has an unpredictable course. Wonderfully fresh way to end this anthology.
On average that amounts to exactly a 2.5*, so I don't have to explain much in terms of calculations.
