This is the fifth collaboration I see between Scorsese and De Niro. I gave Taxi Driver and Casino four stars and Mean Street and Goodfellas three and a half stars. The expectations for this film were therefore not low, although the collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio scores (even) better with me on average.

Robert De Niro plays his role as Rubert Pupkin very strongly, he portrays the character so convincingly that I felt constant vicarious shame as Pupkin again let his obsession with Jerry Langford lead. Which by the way was strongly portrayed by Jerry Lewis.

I have experienced The King of Comedy as a depressing movie about the strange brain twists of a completely obsessed person, it's strange to realize how incredible and unconditional fans some people can be of their idol. Despite the many vicarious embarrassments and the awkward moments , I'm happy with the ending where Pupkin's dream comes true. It closes the movie nicely. Maybe during a review I'll pay more attention to the comic side of the film, but this time I couldn't laugh much.

A film I had been curious about for some time, but now with the arrival of Joker it seemed like the perfect thing to do.

De Niro is truly an actor who seems to be able to do anything, his role as Rubert Pupkin (whom nobody seems to know how to spell or pronounce ) is also a bit like the part he did much later in The Fan , especially the obsession that the characters have in common.
But Jerry Lewis also puts down a delicious parody on himself, the self-mockery is dripping from it.
Also funny that Tony Randall, who I mainly know from the serial version of Odd Couple and from the 50's/60's rom-coms has a short appearance. Great actor!

Very entertaining piece of film, which even now feels fresh and original. I like Scorsese!
4*
