Harry Potter in the Trenches. This 2007 British television film can be considered quite successful thanks to the strong acting of Radcliffe and Haig. Ironically, the latter actor's name matches that of the then British Commander-in-Chief.

The scenes in the trenches look great. It is all well-staged. Nowhere is it portrayed in an overly sentimental or heroic way. For fans of Radcliffe and WWI.

" Do you want me to tell a story ?"

As the son of a famous writer, Jack Kipling does not have it easy. He wants to join the navy to prove himself to others. However, Jack has a problem: he is visually impaired. Therefore, the navy is out of the question. But when the First World War breaks out, this is not made too difficult; after all, necessity knows no law. Thanks to his father's influence, he is trained as an officer. This does not happen without a struggle. It is a tough training course, and due to his visual impairment, he faces an even greater challenge. After completing his training, the real work awaits, in France.

This dramatic story about a (famous) family during the war turned out well. You can empathize with the family, and with Jack, on many points. This film demonstrates once again how war can change a family. The cast delivered excellent acting. They performed with full conviction, and that was evident in the result. The cast's work is, therefore, the strength of this film. The characters were also very compelling; they all react differently to Jack's situation. They try to find solace, but rarely succeed. Once again, compliments to the cast.

Based on a play from 1997. Definitely worth seeing.

Quite a decent film about the First World War. What the film does particularly well is portray the ridiculous optimism and pride that prevailed at the time: 'we'll just beat the enemy and be back home in no time'. This comes across particularly well in the form of David Haig's unbearable character. Once Jack goes missing and the search begins, the film loses some ground in my opinion. Not that it immediately becomes bad, but for me, the strongest scenes are, for example, the farewell between Jack and his father and the depiction of the miserable conditions in the trenches. As far as I'm concerned, a bit more time could have been devoted to the latter.

Certainly for a television movie, it is absolutely not bad at all. Daniel Radcliffe might be a bit stiff at the beginning of the film, but this improves as the film picks up pace, and moreover, I don't mind that he is very young here: after all, it really was about a young generation of men who had to pay for this madness with their lives. Haig also plays his role strongly; I actually know him mainly from comedies, but he handled this role well. Otherwise, there is very little to criticize. As mentioned, I found the first half somewhat stronger than the second, and I can't say that the film blew me away, but I did find it solidly executed.

3*
