Fine psychological horror with very decent gory excesses.

It's wonderful how a film, in which the storyline is slow and in which, except for a few disturbing scenes, apparently little exciting happens, finally manages to reach a stage where the viewer unnoticed has become stiff from the tension. How is that possible. I make an eloquent and slightly dramatic attempt.

The construction is quiet. An introduction round. Main character May is a bit strange, but seems to have things well under control. The vile misunderstanding that the world pours out on her causes empathetic and sympathetic feelings for the misunderstood soul paw. As a viewer you immediately swear unconditional loyalty to the insecure, socially awkward but also humorous protagonist. Those feelings are persistent.

When, in the course of the film, May's behavior becomes less and less connected with reality and becomes a degree more bizarre, she remains the soul leg to whom the sympathy goes. Things are a bit more difficult, because her shield of innocence is dented here and there. Cracks appear. A few serious hickups of mistrust sow some confusion. There are some alarm bells going off, but the support and sympathy for her character remains solid. How wrong and how amazing.

Amazing how the film manages to make the viewer (willingly or unwillingly) a loyal partner in May's bizarre actions. That requires subtly consuming film work and a believable acting performance by Angela Bettis, who plays a creep very cleverly one moment and who is no longer very clever in the next shot.

For me as a viewer, all solid ground under my feet was carefully swept away. Is she pathetic or not pathetic? Creep or misunderstood? Perpetrator or victim? They are fantasies that simmer wonderfully during and after watching the film.

Nice movie.

Crazy movie that for me had to be from the last half hour because I found the first hour quite boring. You could feel it coming from miles away that May wasn't quite sane. The last half hour madam also went crazy and those killings were pretty cool. It would have been better for me. I always like to see a lady - a murderous psychopath so to speak - kills several ladies. So with the last half hour I got my fill, but I don't think this film is completely successful. I find - I say it again - the first hour just too boring for that.

3.0*
