Ha, a Dracula version with Werner Herzog at the helm! It's a bit quirky with a very slow tempo, but atmospheric (I think that's what a Dracula should have) it certainly is. Klaus Kinski fills the role of Count Dracula and does it frighteningly well. Every scene with him is an attraction to watch.

Klaus Kinski is cast in the role of Dracula and Isabelle Adjani often knows how to strike the right chord with her mysterious and sometimes hysterical look. Unfortunately, the other roles are very mediocre in terms of filling. The role of Van Helsing has very little meaning, the henchman is a bit too comical and Jonathan who goes to Dracula's castle too superficial. The reason for this is also that the film more closely follows the story of the 1922 classic 'Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens'. The atmosphere is a plus and some scenes look really good like the ones with the rats and around the plague. This is one of the more faithful adaptations of Bram Stoker's novel, unlike, say, the 1931 film and the 1958 film adaptation by Hammer Film Productions, both of which have major plot deviations. However, this story of Dracula touches me much less than the story like in Bramstoker's Dracula 1992. 5/10

Herzog does horror.

Also the first film I get to see from him. Even after clicking on more than 3,000 films, I have apparently never encountered a Herzog. The expectations were therefore quite high, but this adaptation of the classic from the 1920s is unfortunately at almost exactly the same level.

I especially liked the camera work in this film. Poorly portrayed environments and the images within the castle feel completely amateurish. It should be clear that they have been holding the camera by hand. It produces a lot of unbalanced shots that present the nicely arranged images in a mediocre way.

The acting isn't brilliant either. Kinski was probably unruly again, but his acting isn't necessarily terrible. He does have the charisma, but sometimes he shoots too much into overacting. Adjani is doing well again. That woman has a very special appearance that even with the obstruction of difficult dialogues still works well. I've already forgotten about the rest of the cast, but I can't remember a good performance.

Visually variable. The castle is beautifully decorated. Wonderful playing with shadows and lighting that provide some nice style exercises. The village itself, shot in the Netherlands, by the way, is depicted less interestingly. Story is nevertheless the same for a long part as the original, only towards the end they go in a different direction.

I especially thought it was long and the second part was portrayed ugly. In fact, everything is portrayed ugly and there is no real special atmosphere. Thanks to some wonderful play with the light, the film still has its advantages, but I found it on the same level as the original classic unfortunately.
