Indeed it is super irritating that the protagonist of the previous part 4, now in this part suddenly seems to know nothing. He sees the same containers and wonders WHAT WOULD BE IN THEM ANYWAY?? ? Yes. Really doesn't make any sense. The zombie trip using green gas drugs is quite nicely invented, but really poorly developed in this whole, knowing what happened in the previous part. This could have been a standalone part.

It probably has more to do with the sorry state the zombie genre is currently in, but looking back on the (bland) genre films of this period... I actually find them quite acceptable. A film that, like Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (2005), is shot purely on name. Quite rightly so when you compare them with the ''previous parts''. But apart from the classical predecessors, I see nothing bad in this. Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (2005) was already quite worthwhile (3*), this basically continues in the same vein but add a dollop of cheese on top. Extremely cheesy; the fashion, the characters, the music... It's a time capsule that you'd rather not see, but just like a traffic accident, you can't look away. The name doesn't help and it doesn't help that the Tarman makes its return here as a direct reference, but it is fun.

Director Ellory Elkayem's previous film was a bit grimmer, but Rave to the Grave again takes a comedic direction. Now, comedy was never the strong suit of this series (I realize I'm in a minority with that) and this film doesn't change that much. Boring characters have to find a way through boring situations and do so on boring backgrounds, which is then spread over a (boring) hour and a half. The finale brings a bit more action and that melted zombie is brought back to life (for only two scenes), but that's about the most positive part. It is striking that Elkayem constantly uses effects in which someone is bitten from behind, I think I have encountered this about 15 times in his last two zombie films. It gives an impression of ease, which is considerably reinforced by the other objective elements. A typical direct-to-video piece of junk.
