Vozvrashchenie plot

The story of two brothers, ages 13 and 15, whose father comes home after being away for 12 years. Logically they approach him somewhat reluctantly, but the father gives the impression that he wants to make up for the missed time. He takes them on a journey and teaches them all kinds of life lessons along the way. Unfortunately, he does this in a rather harsh way, and the kids don't understand why.

Beautiful and strong coming of age from Russia that knows how to captivate and touch from the very first moment. We meet two brothers: the burly Ivan and the stubborn Andrey who soon have to replace their brotherly quarrel with surprise; their father, after 12 years of absence, suddenly returns and is sitting at the kitchen table. Before they can think about it, they are taken on a road trip... where the emotions kick in and where the complexity between stranger and father is the order of the day for the boys. I find it surprising that the eldest brother Andrey doesn't really know what to think, but the youngest, on the other hand, knows very well what's going on... And you can't really speak of a heartwarming trip. And the father himself... and what is going on with him, what his background is and what has happened in those 12 years... Joost should know... The division of roles is very superlative and the two brothers also play very well good.

Those scenes on the island reminded me a lot of the later "Mud"... Maybe that film got its inspiration from The Return. The road trip itself is fascinating and the atmosphere and the many pictures are of course a business card and the director knows how to keep that in order and to drag the viewer along. It's not summer like in most road movies, but desolate, gray, gloomy and bare. Something different again... because then, there is simply no happy ending.

As far as I'm concerned, a real gem that you know how to grab.

5.0*

This movie has been on my to-see list for quite some time, both given the overwhelmingly positive reviews and because of the type of movie it was often associated with. But still, this is only my first Zvyagintsev; I was kind of looking forward to this film, for some reason I had expected more of a Tarr, Tarkovsky, Weerasethakul type film. Fortunately, John Milton gave me the final push (something along the lines that I probably liked these kind of depressing Russian movies), and an evening of free time helps too, of course.

Yes, it is simply a stunning film. The story and plot may be a bit simple, but you don't always have to tell a complex story. Visually it's beautiful, and both the father and the two children play their roles very convincingly on this camping trip from hell. Despite the simple story, there is a continuous haze of mystery, and the developments are compelling enough to not get bored for a second. Atmospheric, emotional, intriguing, I could go on and on with spreading superlatives around.

My first Zvyagintsev, but certainly not my last, that's for sure.

Yesterday this one came my way and since the positive reactions here, the expectations were quite high. And they were redeemed 1 by 1, what a movie this was... This is again the reason why I love film so much. A story that you won't let go of afterwards, combine that with visually beautiful pictures and 3 actors from the top shelf and you have a gem.

This one will be stuck in my head for a while!
