Excellent performances by William Powell and Myrna Loy, but the film came across much more as a Rom/Kom and absolutely not as a courtroom drama, which also came across as very superficial and light-hearted.

Last of the three films that William Powell and Myrna Loy made together in 1934. Unlike the other films, this is not a romantic comedy, but a psychological drama about a woman who is given second priority by her husband's busy and successful career. She makes a desperate attempt to compensate for the lack of attention by looking outside the door and promptly comes home from a rude awakening...

Nice film, but I much prefer to see the Powell-Loy duo in comedies and they have made plenty of those together. So I can't complain in that regard. Una Merkel occasionally provides the necessary lightness in a typical Una-Merkel role.

Evelyn Prentice is not very happy in her marriage, her husband is a successful lawyer and is so busy that she feels neglected, when she gets attention from a strange man she agrees after some hesitation to have dinner with him, unaware that he plans to blackmail her for alleged infidelity.
Indeed, it is more of a drama about infidelity than a court crime story, but if that plot part is quite entertaining, I will leave the implausibilities aside for a bit.
Powell and Loy have played together before and do a great job, this time in a much more serious role
what happens in the courtroom at the end is very telling about how society can give women an excuse even in the case of murder in the form of self-defense, even if that aspect is absolutely not applicable in this case, fact is that she was not physically threatened, he simply wanted to throw her out.
Objectively speaking, the real murderer gets a pardon and the victim deserves it
, a stain on the film that still leaves a bit of a bitter taste.
