Another excellent film from Bob Clark. After Black Christmas, Deathdream also manages to create a grim, subdued atmosphere with a fantastic premise. Clark avoids every cliché inherent in the zombie genre and turns it into an almost semi-drama. In that respect, it reminded me a bit of George A. Romero's Martin, a film that also approaches the vampire genre from a different angle. Clark certainly enjoys playing with horror and has already produced some remarkable work in this area, which, in the case of Black Christmas, was groundbreaking. It's a shame this director squandered his potential with mostly bland comedies. This man deserves much more credit.

4*

Just watched a different movie here considering the few reviews

Dead of Night...well, I actually intended to watch the 1945 one. Apparently, a mistake. A mediocre horror film that just meanders along without any suspense. The story didn't captivate me, and the ending is a bit lackluster. 5/10

Deathdream, aka Dead of Night. One of the first Vietnam War zombie films.

After Andy's parents receive news that their son has been killed in the Vietnam War, his mother refuses to believe it. She prays that night that he'll come home safe and sound. A few days later, Andy stands in the hallway at night. Everyone is overjoyed, but not for long. Andy has changed and isn't the same boy. He barely speaks and takes mysterious excursions at night. People in the neighborhood are disappearing, and his father slowly begins to suspect that their son is behind it.

A slightly larger budget than "Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things," and a huge leap in quality. An oppressive and sinister atmosphere in this 'Nam zombie flick.

The scene in the car at the drive-in is by far the highlight. With the special makeup effects of wizard Tom Savini.

Seen on Blu-ray from the triple Bob Clark Collection boxset from 101BlackLabel.
