Miracle plot

"If you believe in yourself, anything can happen."

America craves something positive, a success that gives them confidence. Out of nowhere, there is the unknown coach Herbert Brooks and his twenty boys. Ice hockey and his frustration go back to 1960, when he was kicked out of the Olympic team, which would eventually win the gold medal. He gets to work with a small group of enthusiastic boys. It turns out to be the right man, at the right time. For seven months he molds and planes the team, which will grow beyond itself. Together they will achieve the impossible. Miraculously, they beat the Soviet Union ice hockey team and win gold. The victory radiated on the entire American nation.

Excellent reconstruction of the miracle of Lake Placid (although you can also call Eric Heiden's 5 gold medals a miracle). The US took revenge for the equally painful and controversial lost basketball final at the 1972 Olympics by beating Russia in the semifinals of the 1980 Olympic ice hockey tournament. It was the first time since 1960 that Russia did not win the tournament. The film focuses mainly on coach Herb Brooks [Kurt Russell], who in 1979 decides to make a big change: he leaves a number of top players at home and replaces them with people who - in his eyes - fit better in the team because they have a certain able to perform the task well. His superiors are obviously not happy about that, and the players are certainly not convinced of their own abilities. It's up to Herb and his staff to forge the players into a team and give them the belief that they can beat anyone, even the Russians.

Kurt Russell is convincing in a role that hides his frustration at Brooks being the last player to drop out of the Olympic team in 1960 behind a mask of calm and doggedness. The way in which the players slowly grow together is captivating and believable and the fact that the cast consists largely of talented ice hockey players means that the reconstructions of the training sessions and the matches are absolutely convincing. The sharp editing contributes extra to a piece of sports history that is not particularly in-depth, but very well made and extremely entertaining.

Wow, the movie starts very weak. The first scenes are below level and so it is complicated to get into the story well.

But Russell tackles this problem single-handedly by putting down a rock-solid role.

Apart from the bad start and apart from the necessary clichés, the film has something convincing in it. Well worth a look. *3.5

A stoic Kurt Russell here is great in this otherwise unconventional sports drama, based on true events. The film is entertaining and visually convincing, but the other characters remain on the superficial side and the plot unfolds in a predictable way. Not bad, but director Gavin O'Connor's other two sports dramas, Warrior and The Way Back, are better.
