A good film about three prisoners who escape and want to rob a bank together. Certainly a pretty raw crime drama for its time. The characters are well-developed, especially thanks to the excellent casting. You can see the ending coming from a mile away. Not as good as his later films, but otherwise a fine directorial debut by Nicholas Ray.

Almost more of a drama love story than a crime film; there is nothing wrong with that in itself and the execution is fine, but the message (once on the wrong path, there is no turning back) is very depressing.

A fine film by Nicholas Ray that is a cross between drama, romance, and crime. It is primarily the naivety of the young couple that makes the film special.

The contrast between the dark and harsh world Bowie and Keechie have found themselves in and their innocence and inexperience is strongly portrayed by Nicholas Ray.

Maybe it is a bit too predictable. Especially towards the end when Bowie is ambushed by the police and then kicks the bucket, but this is simply an enjoyable film.

3.5*
