A wonderful romantic film combined with some light and comedic dialogues.

Based on the book "A Letter to Five Wives ", this story is about 3 female characters. This is in contrast to the scrapped "A Letter to Four Wives." The fourth character was originally supposed to be played by Anne Baxter. This was Paul Douglas' first major film. The actor became constantly nervous on set, and started sweating regularly. Because of this, he was forced to change shirts all the time. The character of Addie Ross was deliberately kept secret. The studio had used a clever trick to achieve this. Actress Celeste Holm initially did not want to lend her voice, but director Joseph L. Mankiewicz convinced her that it was essential to the story.

The director was rewarded with 2 Oscars, and received a lot of love from Linda Darnell. Nevertheless, Mankiewicz never left his wife for her. In addition, the film was good enough for 3 other awards, and was nominated as best film. However, he never won this title. The ending was initially a guess for some viewers. I also did not know at first how it was exactly. In 1985, the remake A Letter to Three Wives (1985) was released, but to my knowledge it was never released on DVD. Judging by the reviews, I did not miss much either.

A true classic!

the story is quite nice, 3 women who receive a letter during a boat trip from a 4th woman who claims to have run away with their husband.
The three marriages are then more or less explored in depth through flashbacks.
Actually, you can guess which of the three is the banana, but of course it turns out a bit differently
The 4th woman is given some light but never appears on screen and thus remains a mysterious figure
As far as I'm concerned it could have been done differently, but the film is still worth seeing.

This is the 2nd Mankiewicz I've seen in a short time after Alla About Eve, but I liked this one a little better. The enigma that is Addie Roos throughout the film works quite well to keep the interest throughout the entire running time. Apparently she is very popular with men and arouses great jealousy among women. I was also very curious whether we would actually see her on screen, but that didn't happen in the end. In itself a good choice, because it keeps the mystery alive even after the credits.

The story itself is quite entertaining, but not that special. The film is mainly based on the question whether one of the men actually ran off with Addie Ross. Through flashbacks we get an insight into the marriage of the 3 couples and what the reason for each of the men could be to leave their wife. The different stories are entertaining to follow. Especially the couple that is stuck with the advertising people is the most fun to follow, but overall this will be a film that I will soon have largely forgotten.
