Actress Julia Garner is great again, but I can't say much more positive about this.

A predecessor to the great classic by Roman Polanski, which is being taken in hand by director Natalie Erika James. Apartment 7A approaches the story in terms of stylization fairly loyal to the original film, but builds up little internal and/or effective tension within it. Julia Garner's acting performance is fortunately convincing, but the other roles are very strongly emphasized, which means that the claustrophobic effect is diluted by all the absurdity. James also directs a number of uncomfortable images to the big screen, but otherwise leaves little impression in terms of atmosphere. It all feels too distant and tame, which means that Apartment 7A gives you as a viewer no reason to ever think back to it again.

In 'Rosemary's Baby', Terry Gionoffrio is a houseguest of the Castavet family who dies under mysterious circumstances. This spin-off of the book (and Roman Polanski's masterful film adaptation) recreates the events leading up to Terry's tragic death. Terry [Julia Garner] is an aspiring dancer who suffers a serious injury during a performance that puts an end to her ambitions. After a disastrous audition, she follows theater producer Alan Marchand [Jim Sturgess] to his apartment building to ask for a second chance, but before she can go inside, she begins to suffer from the side effects of the painkillers she's been taking. She is joined by Roman [Kevin McNally] and Minnie Castavet [Dianne Wiest], who not only provide her with moral support, but also an herbal remedy to treat her injury and a room in their apartment. The memorable paranoia of Polanski's Rosemary's Baby is swapped for a conventional tale of devil worshippers with a blatant reference to the American abortion debate. McNally is perfect as Roman, but two-time Oscar winner Dianne Wiest limits herself to an imitation of Ruth Gordon. In terms of quality, it sits nicely between Rosemary's Baby and Look What Happened To Rosemary's Baby. It's not bad, but it pales next to Rosemary's Baby.
