Wolfwalkers plot

"Be fierce. Be wild. Be free."

In a time of superstition and magic, hunter and former soldier Bill Goodfellowe travels deep into "Wolfland" with his lovely daughter Robyn. He has come to exterminate the last wolf pack. His prize: grace from the callous, puritanical Lord Protector and a chance for a better life for his daughter. But when Robyn catches sight of a young wolf, she can't shoot. Instead, she is bitten. That night, a mysterious wild girl named Mebh sneaks into Robyn's room.

A beautiful film, both in terms of animation and story. First of all, I like the drawing and watercolor style: somewhat free and abstract, but very effective in expressing a fairytale world. The story is exciting and intelligent: it clearly uses elements from well-known fairy tales like the werewolf and Little Red Riding Hood, but builds upon them a contemporary, emancipatory story about man vs. nature, city vs. forest, civilization vs. wholeness, Christianity vs. paganism, 17th-century English vs. 17th-century Irish, consciousness vs. unconscious (sleep), and man vs. woman. The film thus critiques our destruction of nature, but there is also a clear feminist theme: man represents rationality and dominance—thus, civilization destroying nature—and woman represents wholeness (magic) and nature itself, which seeks to tame and dominate man (woman is already imprisoned in her home, just as they seek to capture the wolf).

A very beautiful Irish animated film by Moore. Following on from Song of the Sea (2014), which I also found incredibly beautiful. I so enjoyed Wolfwalkers that I'm making it mandatory for my children this weekend.

It's wonderful to be immersed in the folkloric atmosphere of an Irish legend about wolves. The film is reminiscent of Song of the Sea, yet stands entirely on its own. A film with a moral, too. It's also beautifully animated with abundant colors and rich detail. There's a great deal of symmetry. Many shots mirror each other when viewed cross-sectionally. The language, too, is rich with that accent, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the film.

A breath of fresh air amidst all the commercial work. Fantastic!

Yet another disappointing animated film. Okay, it looks pretty nice, and I liked the depictions of wolf life through scent trails, but good afternoon, what absurd simplification and sad clichés in the story. That whole father-daughter relationship, that Lord Protector, the nature theme—you can't get away with it, can you? I just don't understand why this isn't a problem for more people. "Oh father," one moans because he just won't listen, and "Oh mommy," another because her mother is gone, and then twenty times that. Every physical exertion is punctuated with "oohhh" and "aaaahh." Excruciating. Furthermore, it's rather unfortunate that the wolf himself comes off as a kind of keeshond here, because the half-human "wolfwalkers" are actually in complete control. Last year I read Cormac McCarthy's book The Crossing, in which a wolf is captured and a boy lives with it for weeks, but that text actually creates a sense of awe for the mystery of wildness, something that's completely absent from this film. Again, visually, Wolfwalkers is quite nice, including the occasionally distorted perspective, but that's not a sufficient excuse for this banal scenario.
