A mafia film that transports us to the raw, staggering underworld of Italy. Not only is the film so thrilling that it will keep you on the edge of your seat for the full 135 minutes, the film is also heartbreakingly tragic in how the characters become entangled in a web that will lead to their deaths (which also makes the film terrifying and a good warning to keep away from the mafia regardless of your position) and unlike the Hollywood films about the mafia, the film comes across as very realistic as Gomorrah already was, but this film is also visually beautifully designed so that the film also aesthetically pleasing. In that realism we see the decadent life of mafia members, but it also shows how banal and everyday the criminal underworld actually is, which makes it even more disturbing: the mafia is not another (glammer) world that you can only see in the cinema. but it could just be your (criminal) neighbor. The base is in the slums. That's exactly why there's this criminal urge to work you up, but the movie's message seems to be that high or low doesn't matter in the end: everyone is mortal and in that sense equal (and therefore when you rise high you can only go deep. fall). And of course: in the underworld the law of the fittest applies so that protection is a condition of life, which can also explain why the mafia exists in a strongly Catholic culture: everyone needs protection and the 'possession' of a powerful politician or a firearm is in that perhaps a good addition to the trust in God (and certainly a good addition to the protection by the State that has become too much an instrument of the mafia and thus corrupt). A masterpiece.

Excellent crime thriller. Great build. Exciting from start to finish. Definitely one of the best crime movies I've seen in recent years. Also more than successful in the audiovisual field.

And yes, those sex scenes of Manfredi with those two whores. Particularly comical! They were portrayed openly - without taboo - and that's how it should be, of course. Not in his Hollywood style, with all his prudishness.

The violence scenes were sometimes hard but not excessive. This film is mainly about the atmosphere and not to forget of course the excellent acting of the lead actors.

I have nothing more to add on this. The philosopher has already put it more than excellently in his review of 25 July.

4.5*

I had in mind a pure mafia movie, but Suburra is more like a movie about corruption. Corruption that is entwined runs deep in Italy's high circles from politics and justice to even the Vatican. Of course, the mafia also plays its part to defend its own interests. Fortunately no big tangle of characters or constructions. The movie is easy to follow despite the different characters/parts.

The film is smooth because of its pumping linear narrative structure and has a threatening atmosphere. Everyone has butter on their head, it's just a shame that not all parties are equally prominent. Apart from some images taken on the back of the Pope - unequivocally referring to Pope Benedict XVI - the Vatican's role is quickly over. A pity as a viewer, but in reality perhaps not so unusual that some parties in various other mutual feuds simply get out of the way by keeping themselves on the plain.

Especially technically and cinematographically a very fine film. Excellent acting by various individuals and a nice insight into how various sharks use their influence and power to support a social project.
