Director Ron Howard continues to be surprising and versatile, although he is somewhat amused by this story that would have formed the inspiration for Moby Dick. For example, the plot is too casual to really make an impression, with too little time being taken to sufficiently deepen characters and events. The film continuously bounces back and forth between drama, adventure and disaster film, but no part is completed satisfactorily. The cast is more than decent and the film looks great thanks to Anthony Dod Mantle's great camera work, but the special effects are often quite see-through and contrast ugly with the environment. Entertaining enough in the end and occasionally spectacular and exciting, but there definitely could have been more here.

Classic adventure film.

With Ron Howard at the helm, that doesn't bode well, but this is actually the best I've seen from the best man. Now that's only half his oeuvre, but it was somewhat surprising, because I hadn't expected much from this.

This is mainly because camera and color work is remarkably better than the average Hollywood film. The CG may not be of the highest level, but Howard often manages to place his camera in rather unusual places, which certainly gives the film something extra. The green filters and the sharp cut work also give the film some extra visual flair.

The story itself is not very special, luckily this is actually the first time that I get the Moby Dick story, so it is just a bit fresher than it would otherwise have been. With its 2 hours a relatively bulky film, but it never got really slow or annoying.

Man, I was 100% satisfied. Missing something that would make it really unique or genius, but otherwise a very nice blockbuster.

3.5*

“The tragedy of the Essex is the story of men. And a Demon.”

Fine. Ron Howard always provides a skillfully made film, and everything is interesting to watch in In the Heart of the Sea as well. Especially the beginning, and the first confrontation with the great white whale, is well done. The problem with the film is that characters are very poorly developed, and especially the battle between Hemsworth and Walker does not seem credible for a moment. George Pollard's character development is especially fast. It is thanks to the strong acting of Hemsworth, Holland and Cillian Murphy that you empathize with the characters.
