Ponies plot

Moscow, 1977. Two "Ponies" (people uninterested in intelligence jargon) work anonymously as secretaries at the American embassy. Until their husbands are mysteriously murdered in the USSR, and the duo becomes CIA agents. Bea is an overeducated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Her cohort, Twila, is a small-town girl as aggressive as she is fearless. Together, they attempt to unravel a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that initially left them widowed.

Ponies is een jaren 70 spionagedrama dat de Koude Oorlog noch dramatisch, grappig of spannend kan doen herleven. In een overtuigende productionele setting van Boedapests' Moskou, grijpen hoofdrolspelers Twila (Haley Lu Richardson) en Bea (Emilia Clarke) de kans om hun overleden echtgenoten op te volgen in het spionnenvak. De zo essentiële wisselwerking tussen de stereotiepe tegenpolen kan slechts ten dele overtuigen; chaos, misverstanden en gekibbel overheersen. Je kunt Ponies een dark comedy noemen. In welke categorie de serie ook geplaatst wordt, het doet geen recht aan de urgentie en het gewicht van de Koude Oorlog. Dit is (v)luchtig kijkvoer zonder impact.

Ponies is a 1970s espionage drama that fails to relive the Cold War in a dramatic, funny, or exciting way. In a convincing production setting of Moscow, Budapest, leads Twila (Haley Lu Richardson) and Bea (Emilia Clarke) seize the opportunity to succeed their deceased husbands in the spy business. The essential interplay between these stereotypical opposites is only partially convincing; chaos, misunderstandings, and bickering prevail. Ponies could be called a dark comedy. Whatever category the series falls into, it fails to capture the urgency and weight of the Cold War. This is fleeting viewing without impact.
