GENIUS!

So, that's out. How I enjoyed this series. Every effort is made to unite and represent the worlds of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg. And that is done very well. From Poltergeist to Stand by Me, from The Goonies to IT. The music is appropriate and yet not too retro.

Storyline is strong, clichés are avoided, actors are strong characters and although 80s based, still so 2016 effects. Watched it in two evenings.

The best thing I think is that some 80s stories by Stephen King have a basis from the books of JRR Tolkien where the 4 children have a clear link with the 4 hobbits from 'The Lord of the Rings'. That is also applied here and is attractive.

Revival? Nostalgia? retro ? Well, I was a teenager in the 80's, I devoured King's books and Spielberg loved going to the cinema and creating surreal worlds that had a touch of magic about them. Maybe a kind of nostalgia for a world I like to live in. And that's what Stranger Things does.

Everyone watch!

Because there are actually very few negative reactions to this series, I had very high expectations. This is only partly true for me. Let me start on a positive note: the cast, amazing! I do agree with others who bring up Ryder, I clearly liked her the least. I often thought she was exaggerated and unnatural. I had less trouble with the actor behind Lucas, although I thought he was the least of the four most important child actors. And then of course Millie Bobby Brown: excellent! She does a great job in this series, she really got me into her role and her appearance really said enough. This girl has so much potential.

Then the slightly more negative side. The whole thing is so incredibly predictable that it lacks the wow effect for me in that regard. That effect is there in other factors, for example the entire 80's setting, but I missed it in the story itself. I even found it a bit boring towards the end, where I felt a bit more tension in the first episodes. Now I have to say that the horror genre is very high on my list, but Sci-Fi is the opposite. As a result, I may be able to appreciate certain aspects of the series just a little less than someone who has a better grasp of the genre.

I will definitely give the second season a chance, but I hope for something more surprises.

Very nice. Indeed an 80s vibe, but without feeling old-fashioned. In any case, the atmosphere is very pleasant, the soundtrack is strong, and it's easy to empathize with the main characters. Most of them are a bit nerdy outcasts, especially the children, and I recognize a lot of myself as a student in that. But the most appealing character is Sheriff Jim Hopper, who on the one hand looks quite laconic, but is actually very decisive and has his heart in the right place. The latter can be said about many characters, because even the popular boyfriend of the sister of the central character Mike seems to have a good nature.

The plot also feels retro, it is a strong mix of fantasy, horror and science fiction, albeit from 80s films from those genres. Tension arcs are skillfully built, there is a strong montage (such as the scene in which Mike's sister has sex, while at the same time her friend Barbara is eaten by the Demogorgan in the Upside Down).

It's also nice that it doesn't last forever, eight episodes are manageable, after which a nice end to the season is knitted. Obviously not the end of the story, but the last episode manages to satisfy. 3.5* for this season.
