This is an interesting film in several respects.

First of all, the film had some horror elements: a spooky cemetery, a country house with shady staff that seems to be haunted and a tunnel with secret access and corridors where of course daylight does not shine. It gives the film quite a nice atmosphere.

This film is a remake of The Phantom City starring Ken Maynard.

When you see John Wayne and Duke hit in the distance, you are really looking at Ken Maynard and his horse Tarzan. Images from the original film were simply used for the remake.

The horse Duke also shows some learned tricks in this film. In my opinion, a very special horse and unique to work with. The animal even has a certain appearance.

Finally, Blue Washington's role is intriguing. This black man is portrayed as Wayne's scared, cowardly and extremely superstitious sidekick. The fact that he manages to save Wayne from a difficult situation does not seem to be due to a fit of bravery, but through servility and subservience to his boss.

A few years later, Blue Washington was assigned fewer roles, partly due to a less racist view of the white American towards his "black" fellow man.

Blue Washington played the same role in the original.

By the way, he is a textbook example if you have to explain to someone what overacting is.

A score of 3.25 does not exist, hence a 3.5*
