Former alcoholic Justin Kemp [Nicholas Hoult] is called to serve as a juror in a murder trial at an unfortunate moment. The victim is Kendall Carter [Francesca Eastwood] and the suspect is her boyfriend James Michael Sythe [Gabriel Basso], a temperamental man with a criminal past. But when prosecutor Faith Killebrew [Toni Collette] and pro bono attorney Eric Resnick [Chris Messina] introduce the case, Justin quickly realizes that he was in a car accident at the crime scene that night. He seeks legal advice from attorney and AA buddy Larry [Kiefer Sutherland], but he can't offer him an easy way out. Eastwood makes a near-fatal mistake by revealing what really happened halfway through. Jonathan A. Abrams' screenplay is more flawed (the jury deliberation, for example, is almost a carbon copy of 12 Angry Men), but it does a painful job of exposing the shortcomings of the American jury system. Eastwood once again manages to get excellent performances from his cast, with Hoult and JK Simmons (as a judge with a notable background) being the standouts.

Fairly flat, nothing to the imagination courtroom drama that reveals the real course of events far too early. Then you spend over an hour wondering why you are watching what. What will the jury decide? Will the perpetrator eventually turn himself in? Whatever.

Let's hope the old Clint Eastwood is granted another match.

Typically a film that I can find fault with but that I am ultimately very lenient towards. The film is thoughtful and serene in a certain way and that makes it a pleasant watch. At times captivating (the process of choosing jury members, for example) and psychologically not exactly subtle but it works quite well. The naive Hoult also fits in such a role.

The film sometimes seems like a copy (or ode?) of 12 Angry Men. But then really, because here too there is someone who does not want to free up time and someone with personal issues etc. That was acceptable 70 years ago but now it is a bit ridiculous. Fortunately, that was not the emphasis and the film focuses more on Hoult and his psyche and also a bit on the research around it, which means that the film continues to develop and remains fascinating and never really gets the chance to irritate. JK Simmons, even though he always stands out as JK Simmons, once again manages to leave an impression with a supporting role. 3.5*
