When it turns out that the deceased driver of the car was an important senator, Jack is put under pressure to forget everything. Special thriller by De Palma, who was sometimes so busy with his examples that his film had to suffer. The references can be picked up here too, but Blow Out is so rich in everything, including love for the métier and everything that has produced it, that it can ultimately stand on its own two feet. As if he has found the perfect balance between sources of inspiration and his own ideas.

To accentuate the danger and the state of mind, the visual box of tricks opens all the way again. The camera work is such that at certain key moments the oppressive feeling arises that someone is watching and it underlines the paranoia that takes hold of Jack. Beautiful, but also well written. The opening with the slasher is not just a joke, it actually has a function.

Lithgow is perfectly cast as a runaway killer. With that, the film seems to let go of its political context halfway through, but De Palma doesn't let it go completely. All those ingredients together make the final even exceptional. With fireworks, a lit up American flag and more normally much too theatrical, but in this way and with this outcome a fascinating end to a well thought-out film.

A sample of audiovisual craftsmanship. De Palma's resident composer captures the tones of increasing paranoia, the beautiful widescreen cinematography lends itself perfectly to a range of beautiful tracking shots. If you look beyond the film itself, you will quickly find yourself confronted with a fascinating subtext; As a cinematic motion of no confidence, Blow Out fits seamlessly into the spirit of the cold time. The cringe-inducing role of Nancy Allen can be forgiven this modest classic.

Fantastic atmosphere in this beautiful film that uses a beautiful cinematography, some memorable scenes, a great mise-en-scene and a pretty strong Travolta. Very good, best I've seen from De Palma, others like Scarface, The Untouchables or Carlito's Way were a bit disappointing, this one was very good.
