As Bestas plot

The French couple Antoine and Olga live in a village in Galicia where violence and fear reign. They lead a quiet life, although there is little harmony with the other villagers. Things do not go well with their neighbours, the Anta brothers, and it even leads to a conflict, which causes tensions to rise throughout the village.

My fourth Sorogoyen, my third in three days. Also his best of the four I saw. Sorogoyen is an idiosyncratic director who tries to avoid the beaten track in his plot. At Que Dios Nos Perdone (Film, 2016) the detective story is different from usual and the characters are also 'different'.

This is no different in this As bestias. The feel of Deliverance, the 1972 classic, is never far away, but Sorogoyen tackles it in his own way. Here we follow a French tomato farmer who settles in a small dilapidated Galician village. Due to a dispute about windmills, he is bullied away by his neighbors. The brothers, rather marginal by nature, dominate the small community.

Antoine, nevertheless an overblown guy, undergoes all this. The events fueled the tension and you sense that something is about to happen. And yet Sorogoyen surprises you, time after time. The ending also fits perfectly into this event. Where in most movies justice will take place and that memory card will bring the truth to light, you will be disappointed here. Just great!

The second part of the film is also strong. The daughter's misunderstanding. The "new" life of the woman as if she was swallowed along by the forgetfulness of the village where time stood still. Strong acting and beautiful images of nature (for example, that one shot with Antoine and Breixa, the goat farmer, on the hills, wow!). Oh yes, that dog Titan, what a worthless beast by the way...

Strong film in which - this may sound a bit crazy - especially the time jumps will stay with me. You are picked up a few times and put down again a few years later. It always takes a while to realize how much time has passed and what has happened in the meantime, but that worked very well for me. You get the space to fill in a few things yourself. I always like it when a movie doesn't cut all the grass in front of you.

On the downside, and that may be a personal thing, I found the stubbornness of the characters - especially the male lead. I'm kinda done with that genre. With shouting to the screen: don't do it! You get the idea that the consequences of someone's actions are purely due to their own stupidity. That it couldn't have happened to everyone. In my opinion, it is stronger with this type of realism if you think: I could have been that man.

I didn't expect this movie to grab me like that. The running time is a potential war of attrition against the pace of the film, but this film actually flew by. Especially the authenticity of this film stands out. Although the story feels a bit forced, the characters are extremely interesting. I think it's mainly because of the great acting. I would have liked to have given this one a half higher out of sympathy, but all in all I thought the story was a bit too one-dimensional and a number of events too unbelievable.
