Notting Hill has always been one of my favorite rom-coms with that typical British atmosphere of a London suburb that you also find in the Paddington films. Perfect chemistry between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Grant is simply top notch for this genre. The story is fun, the humor works quite well and the film just looks great. Ronan Keating's music is successful and the other characters also did just fine.

Here and there a plot flaw, especially when Anna Scott can still walk around freely in Notting Hill, the restaurant or to the hotel. A few scenes later (or before) she has the celebrity allures where she is not allowed to rest in public. Like many rom-coms, the film is very sweet and predictable, but here you take it all in.

Yesterday I was really stoned and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to watch this movie. Didn't regret it. Couple of cosmetic flaws, but should be possible. The story is okay, I thought the group of friends was a bit over the top eccentric, but that didn't bother me much. There were some awkward moments in the beginning that made me laugh for a change. I liked the atmosphere of London during the film, especially with the characteristic London locations. Especially nice if you've been here once.

Also a romantic movie from the book, quite nice. Every now and then there were some funny bits in it too. Good sets, good dialogue. Roberts looks damn good the whole movie, really doesn't care about anything. Had a great time with this, maybe watch these kind of movies more often if I have hash in the house.

Actually, the big question with this film is why we are all so endeared by this.

Properly considered, Roberts and Grant are just acting like a couple of ironing boards. Well, the idea is to portray how the first few encounters go, and how wooden you always stand there, but still. Good and credible game is really miles away from what we see here tinkering. Purpose of the makers, no doubt, but that doesn't exactly make it something genius.

And neither does the scene it's all about, really, the "I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her". Cheesy, and not really brilliant in delivery, although Roberts has her cow eyes at maximum aperture. All too easy and too cheap.

I think what really matters is the supporting characters. The genius half-wit that Rhys Ifans is, rather than plays. The uber-cuddly Gina McKee you'd carry up the stairs yourself. The Richard McCabe who doesn't understand everything any more than you do. The Emma Chambers who loves you for who you are, and the James Dreyfus who is always there when you need him. Character vs Hollywood. Empty fame versus friends. Money versus history. That's why this is a great movie.
