Central do Brasil plot

Near Rio de Janeiro's main train station, Dora, a former teacher of nearly sixty, earns her living writing letters for illiterate migrants. Her poor clients include Ana and her young son. The boy has never seen his father and hopes to track him down thanks to the written letters. A few days later Ana and Josué return to Dora for another letter because they have not received an answer to the first. However, while leaving, Ana is hit by a bus and she dies in front of her son. Left to himself and without means of subsistence, Josué roams around the station. There he only knows Dora. Unresponsive at first to the little boy's confusion, she is eventually willing to traverse the country with him to help him find his father. In bus and truck, through unknown regions, they then embark on an exciting journey: the journey in search of their own heart.

A long episode of Spoorloos.

Revised again after years and it has not lost its strength.

Strong performance by the two protagonists who increasingly converge during the road trip. A very nice film where everything is right. From the beautiful Brazilian landscape to the accompanying music score. Slightly sentimental but in the right proportion. A must see world film in my opinion.

Beautiful, sensitive film. The story is sad, but I didn't think it was too dramatic or too heavy. You get a glimpse of Brazil, which I like about it. I am a fan of road movies. Especially if they contain a good, compelling story. It is well played and it never bored me. I sympathized with Josué and was hit several times. More than enough. 4*

Beautiful serene road movie with the necessary drama in which a half-orphan goes in search of his father after his mother dies tragically. He gets the help of a former teacher who earns a living as a letter writer for the illiterate.

The first thing that surprised me in the movie was how the boy was abandoned. Inconceivable with us, but striking when your parent(s) drop out that you also have to go through life as a bum. Dora was initially but an icy cold character, little concerned with the suffering of her customers because she reread some letters with third parties and never even sent them. Later she evolved into a warm person with her own feelings and problems.

The search for the father was well depicted along the Brazilian landscape of vast desolate and poor villages. The reunion with the (half)brothers was beautiful and modest. Nice end twist also with the image of an ideal father (and brothers) so that Dora decided that her job was done.
