So: one presents a trick that is impossible/unexplainable without a doppelganger.
Solution: they come up with a cloning device (a bit like transporter at Star Trek)
But: then at some point the clones will suffocate! What now?
Solution: each clone drowns itself in a bowl of water... done!

A historical drama set in Victorian England... that turns out to be science fiction of the cheapest kind.

How anyone can judge this nonsense positively is a complete mystery to me.
In fact, you as a viewer are simply being cheated here.

The Prestige is good, but occasionally collapses under its own weight. The concept is very nice and most of the film is presented in a stylish and interesting way. But in the last fifteen minutes or so the house of cards collapsed a bit for me. Sure, purely on paper , the disputes are watertight, but that's not what my dislike point is about. I found the twist(s) to be way too easy (a doppelganger and a clone, really?) and way too explained. A twist should come together nicely, and not be explained so exaggeratedly. The ending just felt like movie, like a fabricated twist, and that made it a little less interesting for me.
But good, everything else was fine, as I am used to from Nolan. All those magic tricks looked visually beautiful, playing around with different timelines worked great and Bale and Jackman both put in very strong performances. They were evenly matched and played well together. Scarlett Johansson's role could have been scrapped, or should have been made more meaningful.

3.5*, with a slightly more organic ending it would have easily been a 4*.
