"Nothing escapes him."

Private detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his friend, roommate and loyal assistant Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) intervene in a secret ritual in which they capture the influential Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong). Blackwood disappears behind bars and is sentenced to the noose. He seems to have dark powers, can do things that cannot be explained and even claims that he can rise from the dead. This forces Holmes and Watson, assisted by Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), involuntarily to deal with their 'last' case. They will have to join forces to survive in this mysterious plot that threatens all of England.

Unplug it from Sherlock Holmes and I'll enjoy the atmospheric London of the late nineteenth century, the mysterious intrigue in the story, the special effects and dialogue in the film and the magic between the two main characters as well as other special performances, but don't be disappointed with the image I have of the famous detective couple.

The descendants gave permission to make the film but, Sir Conon Doyle must have turned over in his grave a few times...

OK.

It's not quite my movie this, but Guy Ritchie certainly knows how to keep it all interesting. Downey Jr is quite well cast as the somewhat slick Sherlock Holmes. Jude Law as John Watson was played a little less convincingly.

The action is ok, and the location is well chosen. The old atmosphere comes across well and remains present throughout the film. In terms of acting, it's a bit well-behaved, with the exception of Downey Jr. The story is not difficult to follow and visually it is all neat.

The movie is just a little too long. Sometimes it just became a little less interesting to follow. I will also watch the sequel to this. It doesn't really feel like a Sherlock Holmes, but the film is far from bad.

A not so good movie that should be a lot better. There are many separate components that are simply strong. For example, the cast is good; Robert Downey Jr. is charismatic as always and has a great chemistry with opponent Jude Law. A real Sherlock and Watson. Visually there is nothing to complain about. 19th century London looks very nicely designed, and the sets and statues are often atmospheric. But still, despite some good things, the whole never really clicks. The boring and uninteresting plot doesn't help either. It's also not really to be taken seriously. That in itself is not a problem, if you as a director respond to this and really go 100% for the over the top approach. But Ritchie seems to have taken a more grounded/realistic approach here, so it doesn't work. That bad guy and the whole cult thing, yuck, boring. Thirteen in a dozen.

If this had been followed by a whole series of sequels, I'd leave it at this one, but since there's only 1 sequel, I'll check it out again, if only for the excellent duo Downey Jr-Jude Law.
