The Neon Demon is an allegorical delight and whose predatory climate is hard to escape. Refn pulls out all the stops and halfway through he throws some more oil on the allegorical fire. Really really enjoy. He perfectly captures the superficial themes of The Neon Demon, and Martinez's synth-infused score (almost approaching his magnum opus Spring Breakers) and Natasha Braier's cinematography do the rest. Don't underestimate the impact that a female DoP also has on a themed film and the results are huge.

The dynamics between Jesse, Ruby, Sarah and Gigi are so intriguing and especially Jena Malone knows how to find the ideal balance between attraction and repulsion as Ruby. Sexually charged, with exploitative excesses and campy monologue, Refn really knows how to sketch a very oppressive and enchanting universe. A delightful mix of neon-soaked abstract compositions, mesmerizing close-ups of Elle Fanning's intriguing asymmetrical face, and exploitative set-ups such as steamy showers. Aesthetics is everything. The knife deepthroat and corpse masturbation scene are of unprecedented class. Nowhere is it cheap effect, it really has its aesthetic allegorical function.

That Refn opens the title sequence with his initials is not an unjustified boast, because this self-proclaimed branding is very justified. He makes very unique cinema, and with a visual language that really appeals to me as a cinephile. It's really nice that after the reviews of only God Forgives Refn emphasizes that he will never become a crowd pleaser. On the surface, Refn in particular seems to be lacking in content, but nothing could be further from the truth.

After Valhalla Rising and Drive I have developed a soft spot for the films of Winding Refn. It may not be the most accessible cinema, it is sometimes painfully slow, but there is always an intriguing edge to it and the quality drips from it. This also applies to The Neon Demon. This time it's a pitch-dark portrait of the moral emptiness in the modeling world. Young, innocent, beautiful Jesse leaves for the big city hoping for a modeling career - and she succeeds. But in beautiful images, with a lot of emptiness in the scenes, we see the superficiality and narcissism of the models, the figures around them (with a creepy bit by Keanu Reeves) and actually that whole world. And slowly this escalates in a hypnotic (and gory) way. No, it doesn't end well: first Jesse is also corrupted into an egocentric narcissist who, so to speak, deals with corpses. But then her fellow models and the make-up lady, portrayed as amoral egoists from the start, turn out to be even worse - they are also about corpses, and not so to speak.

My opinion fluctuated a bit during the film. The first half was beautiful craftsmanship, but also a bit slow and not equally interesting everywhere. When at some point the brakes are released, it becomes quite over the top, but even there it remains clear that Winding Refn is a professional. It appears from the mixed reviews that not everyone can appreciate his style, but again I am certainly not disappointed.

Strange director, that Refn. Started OK with Pusher, then finally got it wrong with Bronson and Valhalla rising, then delivered a true masterpiece with Drive and proved itself again with Only God Forgives. The neon demon falls somewhere in the middle. The movie looks good and has some pretty strong scenes, but come on, when you're making a movie about someone so gorgeous that the whole modeling world goes off the rails, the least you can do is cast someone who is actually beautiful. is.
