Good versus evil story that is otherwise about nothing. This film by Mann reminds me a bit of films by John Carpenter: the synthesizer sounds, emphasis on atmosphere, bizarre content. The Keep urgently needs an update on DVD to start with. A sharper image can undoubtedly contribute to a better film experience. The VHS is almost at the end of its lifespan. Above all, a pity about the somewhat empty story. These kinds of films where you have to swallow everything without thinking are not for me.

Hypnotic film that can absolutely be called a forgotten gem due to the strong acting, the beautiful soundtrack of Tangerine Dream and the strongly shot images of Mann. Jürgen Prochnow is for me the best example of an actor who can also play a perfectly acted role outside his own language, because he is absolutely as good in this film as in the equally brilliant Das Boot. I did not immediately recognize the always strong acting Ian McKellen, I am perhaps too used to seeing this man in wizard or superhero outfits.

Well, a typical case of style-over-substance, because the story isn't really that strong. The images are so hypnotic that none of this matters. It's still those enchanting synthesizer sounds that make the film so hypnotic to sit through. I miss the time when you could make films interesting with a lot of smoke (to hide the mediocre special effects), good acting and a dreamy soundtrack. Where have those eighties gone?

Too bad a proper release is still pending, I would love to see it with new audio and sharper images.

What an annoying amateurish boring film this has become, the story is as vague as anything, the uniforms are completely wrong, as are the weapons, there is some atmosphere, partly due to the soundtrack, but that is the only thing, and that with such a star cast with names like Gabriel Byrne, Jurgen Prochnow, Scott Glenn and Ian McKellan.

It doesn't matter at all because most of it doesn't matter at all.

Karel Biddelo seems to have found inspiration for his Red Knight series in his album (Vrykolakas), which was loosely inspired by this film, that comic strip is unfortunately much more interesting than this film.
