Wake in Fright plot

"Have a drink, mate? Have a fight, mate? Have some dust and sweat, mate? There's nothing else out here."

A young, naive, English teacher teaching in rural Australia is on his way to Sydney during his Christmas vacation, only to find himself stranded in a city full of drunken and deranged men who are only concerned with beer, sex, gambling and hunting. After a misplaced guess, the cash-strapped teacher realizes he's completely at the mercy of the scum.

Nice drinking in the Yabba. Strange film, in which an English teacher working in a backwater in the Outback ends up in an even more backward backwater in the Outback. Not really the intention, because he was already looking forward to a holiday back in civilization, on Bondi Beach with shapely blondes in bikinis. Anyway, it sounds a bit like the cliché setting for a horror film, but it isn't - it's a raw film about the Australian equivalent of rednecks and how they get through their lives with lots of beer, gambling, drunkenly hunting kangaroos, and more drinking. Strong atmosphere in a convincingly portrayed somewhat backward community, but also a bit boring at times because not much interesting actually happens - there isn't much plot, and at a certain point I started to believe it a bit with those hopeless drunks.

Excellent film in which a teacher on his way to Sydney ends up in a town where he loses his money gambling. A beautiful opening shot and the town and its somewhat strange inhabitants are well portrayed. The course is not easy to predict and the whole thing slowly becomes a nightmare. Raw and a number of uncomfortable scenes.

Sultry, slightly surrealistic and often disturbing work about a young English teacher who, on his way to Sydney, gets stranded in a city full of drunk and crazy men who are only concerned with beer, sex, gambling and hunting. Slowly but surely he sinks to their level. The alienating atmosphere is cleverly captured and the acting is strong; especially lead actor Gary Bond and Donald Pleasance as one of the lunatics he gets to know are excellent. The explicitly depicted violence against animals (unfortunately this concerns real footage) is repeatedly offensive, but is important for the theme of the film. Ultimately, a typical unpleasant but at the same time powerful 70s film of which you can hardly get certain images out of your retina.
