Good film in which a gangster from London tries to find out the circumstances of his brother's death. A fairly typical British crime film with a fine role by Michael Caine. Perhaps a bit outdated here and there (the violence was not too bad, for example). But the gray New Castle provides a fine backdrop and the film contains a number of strongly edited scenes and an unexpected ending.

Nice raw this one. With a gloomy backdrop, a mobster returns to his hometown seeking revenge for his brother's mysterious death. There is quite a lot of cold blooded killing and there is no shortage of sleazy scenes and unsympathetic grisly characters. Caine was still here in his native country, making one of his most famous early films. Also shows that you don't need an excess of violence and action to get a good crime movie.Good movie.

Never seen the remake with Stallone. Caine plays the part of Brumby, and just for this wink I still put him on my list.

Ah.

I just thought it was all a bit bland. A lot more charming and idiosyncratic than the average revenge film, but all communicated in an extremely uninteresting way. Get Carter is the next film that attracts audiences with a mainly raw and authentic impression, but it doesn't appeal to me as much.

Nevertheless, it's nice to see Caine in this role. Especially compared to the characters he plays these days. It's all extremely different. He could also have been a cool character, but Hodges takes the romance around his character a bit too far. This makes it a bit difficult to really feel anything for him, because eventually those scenes start to get very boring.

Furthermore, the revenge is not always satisfying, but towards the end there are some surprising sequences that take the level just a bit further. Had it not been for the very last scenes, this film would have received a 2.0*, it is the surprise of the event that is quirky and outside the box enough.

Oh well, it's not really my thing. A film that can be called very interesting in its core, but then draws out quite a few side issues to distract the viewer from the better sides. It also takes a very long time before the first really memorable scenes come to the fore in the field of revenge, because I won't remember much of the film anyway. Very sad.
