Quite a special film which, in my opinion, also tends to Fantasy besides Horror. The latter mainly because a large part of the film takes place in the fictional location "Midian", where many strange characters ("freaks" is indeed the correct name for these figures) are present.

The somewhat light-hearted (with some humor) and atmospheric story may not be great, but it does manage to keep it interesting (I didn't find it really exciting anywhere) and in particular the execution of the story is nicely done and that is particularly noticeable thanks to the sets, special effects, make-up and costumes, which are quite impressive for a film that is now a quarter of a century old (certainly at the time). Here and there the film is a bit long-winded and boring and that's probably because I saw the "director's cut" of it, which lasted almost two hours. The last part of the story with the fight between the people, kind of police, two protagonists and the freaks was nice and that part also contains the most horror.

The cast did a good job and especially both lead actors Craig Sheffer and Anne Bobby who didn't look bad and could sing quite nicely (in the beginning) By the way, I thought Catherine Chevalier was a nice appearance in this film and she is even to admire it topless. That topless admiration also applies to Christine McCorkindale, but she was pretty prickly (a great costume though)

Just an entertaining Horror/Fantasy movie to watch.

Boone, a troubled young man, continues to suffer from some very realistic nightmares about a place called Midian, where the monsters live. The dreams used to scare him, but now they are almost welcoming. His doctor, Philip Decker, wants to have him medicated and supervised. Decker wants Boone to believe that he is dangerous, uncontrollable and murderous, when in fact it is Decker himself who commits horrific murders and wants Boone to bear the brunt.

When Boone is taken to a hospital and overdoses on the powerful hallucinogens Decker supplied him, he encounters another man who speaks of Midian. So Midian is real and Boone knows he has to find his way there. But Boone is not welcomed by the monsters that live under an old cemetery, at least not right away. When one of them tries to take a bite out of him, Boone runs for his life and runs straight into Decker and a wall of armed cops. Boone gets shot, but is he really dead?

Both Decker and Boone's friend Lori are determined to find out, and there's only one place to look.....Midian.

This is definitely not a bad movie. Some of the dialogues are a bit corny and some of the special effects aren't that good and a bit outdated, but at least it's original. David Cronenberg as the evil Dr. Decker is smooth and hypnotic. The monsters are the good guys for a change and they look really cool! My absolute favorites are the sexy but ill-tempered Peloquin, the lovely quilled Shunma Sassi and the amazing god Baphomet, all created by the amazing imagination of Clive Barker. The underground city of Midian is an impressive backdrop, as is the Gothic-style cemetery above it, easily recognizable as a painting in several shots.

A film that I appreciate with a nice 7+!
