It should certainly be seen by Carpenter fans, but for me it is not a classic, rather a snack. A mishmash of Stephen King (the writer and his obsessed readers are reminiscent of Misery) and Philip K Dick (losing grip on reality) with some Lovecraftian monsters, but without the convincing sketches of a close-knit community like King or the much more far-reaching paranoia as with Dick. It all remains superficial with some cheap effect without coherence. Then another monster here, then another scary head there.

It certainly looks good but you have a bit of the idea of driving through the haunted house of an amusement park in a cart. Because the plot is not very structured and not very deep or focused and it never gets really creepy.

It lacks atmosphere and with a story like this (HP Lovecraft-like madness takes over the world) there really could have been more in it.

Then the casting. Prochnow and Neill are doing well, but Julie Carmen didn't appeal to me.

Soundtrack is good, nice rocking with a fine Carpenter synth tune as a basis.

Time for them to film The Call of Cthulhu, a while back I played a pretty oppressive game that told that story well..
