And so you see an old Polanski again.

Lots of expectations and a good build. The 1970s shots of Paris, Polanski's role, the apartment and its strange neighbors and traits... and that previous occupant's suicide. Which way is it going?

And here the film is initially too long. The idea is rock solid and certainly the fact that that whole apartment complex is in the hands of a cult, of which Polanski is then the new prey came out pretty well. But the moment Polanski dresses himself as the deceased resident it really goes in all directions in the last fifteen minutes and is the most far-fetched.

And that is very unfortunate. Trelvolski's rituals (bar visits), the hallucinations, those crazy antisocial friends of his, the quirky yet dark exciting atmosphere and characters and the structure did not bore and managed to form color. But just like Rosemary's Baby, the film actually builds pretty much to something meager. As if Polanski was in a hurry to finish. Because that last shot.... well...

But as I said: The idea is rock solid and hence a 3.5*
