Marebito plot

Matsuoka is a freelance cameraman for a TV channel. Obsessed with filming, he goes out with his camera every spare minute. As an experiment, he wants to film real horror, but everyday life is not exciting enough for that. But after a bizarre suicide on the subway, Matsuoka is convinced that true horror always takes place underground. Armed with his camera, he single-handedly combs through the deserted corridors of the metro, until at one point he films something that he can hardly believe himself.

Finally seen it, and pretty good. The awkward soundtrack and mystery make it quite creepy in a strong first half. The occasionally grainy shots also help, but from the moment the girl enters it all becomes less - despite the fact that she is naked.

And while much remains unclear, is it really his daughter and has he gone mad, has he finally experienced his longed-for agony, or a lot of what you see at the end didn't happen. That mystery is fine, but I have the feeling that after the good build-up, much more could have been achieved in terms of discomfort.

PS staring at those screens in his tiny apartment, the dinginess, loneliness and depression reminded me a bit of Pi. Completely different kind of film, of course, but good Although there also seems to be a deeper thought behind this.

Bon, I still give him a narrow 3 * if only for the unreal, weird, mysterious atmosphere, because of the way Matsuoka is caught between what he sees and what he thinks he sees. Visually, this is a very unappealing low-budget film. There is not much horror to be experienced and there is no scare either, because it turns out that the underlying meaning of Marebito touches on psychology: the man killed his wife and abused his daughter, but suppressed it that reality . The answers remain scarce and afterwards you start to think. It is at least a film that makes an attempt to deviate from the well-trodden paths in this genre, but whether I can really call this a successful result is another matter ...

Better than expected.

A bit afraid to revise some older favorite Japanese horrors, because that style has become a bit too familiar in the meantime, and the effectiveness of those films is not what it once was. Fortunately, this Marebito is not affected by this.

Because it's a different kind of movie. Actually leans more towards the found footage hype that would erupt a few years later, and is also somewhat different in terms of themes (more Lovecraftian, not so much the classic ghosts with old pain).

The DV look is not really charming, but it works well. Soundtrack is very strong and also the lead performance of Tsukamoto is quite good. Short but powerful film, which still feels quite uncomfortable, and touches on some fun lore. Pleasantly surprised by the review of this Shimizu.

4.0* and a detailed review
