Thanks for the tip, John Milton, and a point for your judgment skills: I thoroughly enjoyed Dream Home. This is a kind of slasher, to be sure, but one that is much more fun, original and intelligent than the usual stuff. No forty-five-minute build-up here, no weirdo in a gimmicky costume who slaughters his way through a group of teenagers for vague reasons and is then unmasked (or turns out to be supernatural). No, this film does not try to create mystery in such a lame way: here we see (non-chronologically but still easy to follow) how Cheng has dreamed all her life of her own house in a Hong Kong where house prices are skyrocketing. And then she finally finds a house: expensive, but just within her reach. Until the owners notice after the down payment that the prices are shooting up further, they cancel the purchase to speculate that the price will go up further. And they shouldn't have done that.

This proverbial straw leads to a Cheng who goes full-on postal, and whose good idea to get the asking price down consists of going on a massacre in the apartment building in question: no matter who, many a neighbor and family gets a visit from an angry Cheng and a big knife. I was happy about this. The film looks tight, with great acting and a fair amount of blood and gore. Also quite a bit of originality on various levels, with great kills and situations (that woman with the stake in her head), a murderer who sometimes clumsily improvises her way through her murders, and a nicely told story with some dry black humor every now and then. The ending, for example, was also a nice example of irony. I will definitely seek out more of Pang.

Great original kills in this entertaining horror film. The story has a nice idea and manages to come up with something original because the killer on duty doesn't just kill, but with a purpose.

And that specific goal that the killer has in mind is a nice idea considering the problems of expensive apartment buildings in Hong Kong. The killer is also an ordinary person who also has a dose of luck with many kills. Quite funny. But the blood is abundantly present in this film. In addition, some black humor and kills that are really nicely built up. Recommended! 7.5/10

The kills can hardly get much bloodier and more clumsy, the camera work is also very good, but the story was a bit too long-winded for me.
