A strong battle sequence in the last 45 minutes of 13 assassins prevents a really low score for this Japanese revenge film. There is something different about this work on the narrative and acting level, and that is only too apparent, especially in the first hour. The film starts rather slowly, the story is rather standard (despite the very interesting historical context) and the events in the first hour hardly captivated me as a viewer. As said, the battle is very well done, especially in the beginning, although it is a pity that you can actually fill in in advance exactly how things will turn out.

Nice to have seen, but unfortunately a slight disappointment.

2.5*

Strong Mike. A day earlier I was even less enthusiastic about the Crows Zero films, I was now very happy with the result that Miike delivers with 13 assassins. The story, which revolves around a landlord who rapes, maims and murders people, starts quite brutally, but has a rather calm build-up. The moment the group of samurais set out to stop the landlord, the pace picks up, although it must be said that the film really never gets boring. Even some humor in between with the moments between the samurai and insects, the build-up to the second part, in which the action scenes appear richly, is good. Those action scenes that follow are very strong and quite brutal. 13 assassins use the 120 minutes very well. The result may be there.
