Oh... what an amusing film again . Boy, it seems like only Franco can come up with this.

El Canibal, or "Devil Hunter" is a very mediocre film. It is indeed not an erotic cannibal film, but there are some close ups of the pussies. Of course, the story doesn't amount to much. And you can complain about the acting anyway. The special effects are also very poor. The ending is predictable. There are also a number of fights in it, but they don't look too good, a bit monotonous even. Editing is also terrible. Franco can entertain you (with his bizarre works). But before the ten minutes of watching this film, I already had bags under my eyes. Tiring piece of shit that gets a 1.0 because of Al Cliver.

As a double feature with Terreur Cannibale (1980) released by Severin on Blu-ray. A cannibal diptych with remarkably few... cannibals. Inimitably stupidly written schlock where the few moments with the cannibals don't even make the film, but the general shitstorm of bad dubbing and infantile acting does. A full-blooded Franco sleaze flick. A few (almost) hallucinatory shots of the 'cannibal' in a wide area surrounded by jungle. Because despite the fact that these kinds of films had to be made for a piece of cake in a very short time, the cinematography (by Juan Soler in this case, absolutely respected) was often still quite interesting. Including many tricky zoom shots with different frames. Sloppy (yes), but also atmospheric and ultimately effective for the type of film. The Gialli are a better example of this than these types of cannibal films.

In all honesty. Jess Franco came pretty close to creating a classic jungle flick: beautiful location (welcome to the green inferno of yes... Spain), very nice guerilla style cinematography (as it should be in a jungle film), Fulci regular Al Cliver in a leading role and a handful of beauties who never appear in clothing. As you read, plenty to enjoy.

Nice to see Al Cliver as a leading man for once. He really comes into his own as an adventurous badass who has to save a damsel in distress. The bluray of 88 films shoots in all directions. Sometimes a beautiful image (how beautifully that green jungle comes to life on Blu-ray), other times very grainy. At one point there is even a scene where the English audio disappears and you are presented with a Spanish track. Oh well, it's part of the charm of such a film. By the way, the English dub is atrocious.

But why is The Devil Hunter ultimately not the jungle classic it could have been? Because in all honesty, you belong to a very niche group if you enjoy this. Two major sore points are the poorly choreographed death scenes (not just in terms of gore, but in terms of overall execution) and the bizarrely poorly designed monster. A black man with a pair of red ping pong balls for eyes... That was it. Shame! With some better gore and editing during the death scenes and a more iconic 'cannibal' this could have become a classic. Nevertheless, this is still quite entertaining Franco schlock.

At first glance, 102 minutes seems quite a lot for a film of this caliber. Of course it actually is, but it didn't really bother me. Although the repeated shots of the dancing 'tribes women' alone (where Franco shamelessly zooms in on a butthole at one point) could have shaved half an hour off the running time.
