Dawn of the Dead plot

"When there’s no more room in HELL, the dead will walk the EARTH!"

All over the world, more and more dead are coming to life and it's not exactly making it easy for the survivors. Reporter Francine decides to flee by helicopter with her friend Stephen and the two soldiers Peter and Roger. The foursome then find shelter in a huge shopping center, where they erect barricades to defend themselves against the gruesome flesh-eating dead. At first they seem safe in the mall, but the living dead just keep advancing.

In 1978 George A. Romero continued the story of his 'The Night Of The Living Dead' filmed in black and white 10 years earlier with the color shot 'Dawn Of The Dead'. This meant that no melted chocolate could be used in place of blood and that the order at the butcher had to be even fresher and larger in size. 'Dawn Of The Dead' is a perfect combination of gore, tension and humor. The strong point of this film is that the story pays even more attention than its predecessor to the social consequences of a large-scale outbreak of disease (in this case the absurd notion of a zombie plague). The chosen setting (an abandoned shopping center) where all the modern conveniences of the consumer society are available for the taking provides the hilarious background. As with its predecessor, the ending, of course, remained open. As a B-movie director, you never knew whether there would ever be money for a sequel.

Zombie movies aren't exactly my thing right now. it's all the same. Also with this original from Romero.

You watch slow-moving bloodthirsty zombies for almost 140 minutes, guys who shoot the whole movie trying to keep those zombies away from them all in a large shopping center. I was glad that after 1½ hours I didn't get to see those zombies, luckily it was a bit of rest in the tent until a motorcycle corridor showed up and of course those zombies again. At one point it started to bore me quite a bit and I actually think that 1½ hours is quite long enough for such a zombie film of which far too many have already been made. I liked the music, but for the rest.....mwah. Not to be repeated in any case.

We watched the 156 minutes (Ultimate Final Cut).

“Dawn of the Dead” is arguably the greatest horror sequel of all time!

It's easy to see, though, that the events of Dawn right after Night of the Living Dead (Film, 1968) - MovieMeter.nl seem to take place as the helicopter flies over rural Pennsylvania.

The story and its storyline are definitely there and I love seeing what Romero's underlying message was for the film; consumerism and its connection to political capitalism.

The zombies have great makeup and hulking moves, really well done by the choreographers who set it all up. In addition, Tom Savini did an excellent mastery of the gore effects, which I miss in modern movies today. As a viewer, I was very attached to the four main lines and how they coped with the adversity in the mall.

Apart from the dead who walk the earth, the atmosphere is very believable and has a strong sense of fear.

"Dawn of the Dead" is an almost horror masterpiece and a great movie overall.

An 8 in appreciation!
