The Man Who Laughs plot
"THE BREAKING HEART BEHIND THE LAUGHING FACE."
Gwynplaine, son of Lord Clancharlie, has a permanent smile on his face. It was cut into it by the King in revenge for the betrayal of Gwynplaine's father. Gwynplaine is adopted by a showman and during his travels he becomes a popular idol. He also falls in love with the blind Dea. The king dies, and his evil jester tries to destroy Gwynplaine.
