I did not see The Dark Crystal (1982) yet, but I would like to make a comparison with other fantasy films from the eighties such as Die Unendliche Geschichte (1984) or even The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988 ). Quite a nice fantasy to watch, although the emphasis, as already mentioned here, remains quite childish.

Here and there also a bit old-fashioned in the costumes and creation of the figures. Nevertheless, an enjoyable film for young and old. I have no idea if this would still resonate with my children, I'm afraid it will. The film does have some nice settings. There was something about the stinking swamp or the various labyrinths.

Nice to see a young Connelly! Bowie is a pure entertainer. Quite a bit of vocals in the film, not bad, but for me it wasn't really necessary. Nice to have seen.

There are good moments in this fairy tale, but the presence of David Bowie ruins it a bit for me. Worst haircut ever for a bad guy (pop culture!), and he's not believable in that role either. Fortunately, his acting career soon came to an end. There's a lot of imagination in there, though, and the way Henson gives life to the labyrinth is really a feat of puppetry, like those door knockers, those hands when Sarah falls down a well, and "cookie monster" ludo. He raised his craft to a level that was never reached afterwards; the rise of CGI has killed these kinds of films. Connelly's natural beauty is a perfect match for her cuddly character. I personally liked Dark Crystal better, because the universe was more tangible and detailed.

After seeing The Dark Crystal I thought I'd give Labyrinth a try. This film has all kinds of special creatures but the film feels much more childish than The Dark Crystal. Jennifer Connely didn't seem right here to me either. I don't really have anything to do with David Bowie either. It would have been much better if it had all been a bit "darker" and less childish, but hey, it's a family movie.
