In a world that smacks of corruption and decay, a traumatized anti-hero embraces his quest to free a young girl from her captors. Although this Scorsese premise is mixed in the execution with a Refnian sauce of sworn silence and sudden explosions of violence, Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) never lacks the willfulness to completely shape the film stylistically. The suffocating editing and the oppressive soundtrack successfully amplify the intended fever dream content. The ironic working title plays on the conventions of the nightmare: in the end it turns out to be just a beautiful day in New York.

Nice.

After half an hour I could only think of one thing ... that I'm such a Joker please. I saw that the comparison with Taxi Driver has been made here before, which I think is a little less justified because Ramsey's directing style is very different from Scorsese, but with Phoenix in the lead role and with a man who slowly goes on, the parallels with Joker sure to draw.

Visually at least a lot better (and more modern), but it is especially the soundtrack that stands out positively. Quite a bit of messing around, also with some older songs in the background. And then the editing that just makes it all a bit more awkward. Things like that give a film a lot of atmosphere in my opinion.

Phoenix itself is also doing much better. A lot more introverted and subdued, I much prefer. Plotje is still interesting, although I did not like the ending a bit. The sneer at politics and "powerful men" felt just a little too easy and the scene in the mansion was also a bit lukewarm. But otherwise a nice discovery, maybe give the rest of Ramsey's oeuvre a chance (sometimes a second chance).

3.5*

From the start, director Lynne Ramsay puts things on edge: she sprinkles subtle puzzle pieces about the past and current state of Joe, a taciturn war veteran who is literally and figuratively marked by the war in Afghanistan and his traumatic childhood. The plot matters less and less. Joe doesn't seem to have his head around it, he's estranged from reality. The music of Johny Greenwood (Radiohead), dark and repetitive, the magnificent playing of Joachim Phoenix, the razor-sharp editing... everything is right in this film that takes the revenge movie genre to another level.
