A sort of mood piece that tells the story of a young actress through disjointed flashes of the narrative and vignettes, paying increasing attention along the way to the toll of fame. Perhaps quite tailor-made for BB, as he was already dealing with the same sort of scenes at that time as the film depicts. BB gives a fine performance, insofar as one can judge that by a film like this. Mastroianni is also entertaining and quite a bit younger than I have seen him before—yet this is already his 44th film, and his first was well over twenty years earlier.
As a film, I found this interesting but not exactly successful; the idea is good in itself, but the form takes over too much from the content, in my opinion. Occasionally, it does produce very beautiful images, but the downside of that is that the whole comes across as unbalanced. Incidentally, I saw the restored version; the colors are beautiful in themselves, but also somewhat unfamiliar for a film from that era—how shall I put it, rather too washed out and too much like a modern yellow/green color grading, instead of the harsh blue and red colors of the material from that time. It certainly gives a film a different atmosphere.
