Typical Bergman, more for the mind than for the heart, and I like to see the latter a bit more. Intriguing and quite fascinating, but also extremely cold and distant. So is the acting. The actors do not try to convey emotions, but serve entirely to support the theme. Interesting, but that doesn't make me sympathize with anything. Furthermore, beautifully shot with sometimes nice contrasting black and white and especially those shots with that boy on the coast and that rippling water in the background are beautiful. 3.0*.

Indeed a typical Bergman, but one of the lesser ones. I didn't think the first 70 minutes were anything special. The only positive thing about it for me was that the painter punched the gentleman in the snout who was cackling after him. I would have done the same in his place. For the rest I found it all quite heavy. No, you should not look for cheerfulness in Bergman's films. Fortunately, the last 20 minutes made up for it. It had some very beautiful surreal scenes. Those fluttering pigeons in the hallway, the woman lying in state, etc. That's how I like Bergman's films.

3.0*

My first Bergman, and it wasn't exactly a hit. It starts very ominously and in principle that strange and scary atmosphere lasts the entire film, but on the other hand it never really comes to life and it never really got under my skin. That scene at the beginning in which Von Sydow's character talks about the scary figures he sees in his dreams gave me goosebumps, but then it is actually expressed very subdued later in the film. I was still a bit hungry and expected a higher acceleration that ultimately did not happen, even though there are certainly many individual good scenes. The old woman who suddenly appears on the washing line, the mysterious events in the castle/estate, the ending. It's clear where someone like David Lynch got his inspiration. Vargtimmen reminded me very much of Twin Peaks at times, both visually and in terms of content. The surreal is certainly a great similarity, but where Lynch's surrealism and absurdity are, in my opinion, always palpable to a certain level, this film by Bergman is above all very distant, cold and abstract. Max Von Sydow's character is completely elusive and never really sympathetic and as a viewer you never really have a firm grip in this black and white nightmare world. Except for the character of Liv Ullmann, who plays the role of the normal person who is dragged into madness against her will excellently.

I am still very curious about the rest of Bergman's oeuvre, but I fear that Vargtimmen was not exactly the best introductory film. I don't immediately rule out a revaluation in the future, but for now it's only a 2.5*.
