Film about love and the right to love again.

Very charmingly presented, tender, somewhat moving and with beautiful performances across the board.

Pure British made as only the British can do with recognisable people and situations.

Great movie.

Nice film in which a woman thinks she sees her deceased husband again. A film about mourning that manages to avoid sentiment. A bit boring at times. On the other hand, there are a few nice moments and also two nice roles by Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman. Three stars for this directorial debut by Anthony Minghella.

From the first time I saw this film (maybe 30 years ago) I remembered it being a comedy with poignant edges, and "funny" enough this also seems to have been Anthony Minghella's original intention, but for both me and him the film ultimately contains much more serious tragedy. A beautiful and moving story that is beautifully portrayed by actors without any glamorous appearance, with snot bubbles when crying and their hair in disarray. Beautiful film.

Seen on a BBC DVD in the original TV aspect ratio (4:3) with English subtitles, and with as a bonus an interview with Anthony Minghella with English subtitles of almost half an hour plus his non-subtitled audio commentary on the film. The screenwriter-director turns out to be a very clear-speaking and lucid thinking filmmaker, from whose story a beautiful picture emerges of his experiences with his directorial debut, what it means to have experienced and sympathetic collaborators, and how a small budget (half a million) determines artistic choices without necessarily negatively influencing the impact of a film. Bizarre detail: of almost every scene there are only 1 or 2 takes, but I can't tell that from the end result, the actors are so good in their roles (and the crew worked so efficiently). One of the most illuminating and interesting audio commentaries I have ever listened to.
