After seeing this film, I understand the hostile reactions to Juste la fin du monde (2016) even less. Quite similar films, in setting, in type of characters, in the drama, in the dialogues. So they knew what Dolan could bring.

For me, both films mainly rely on individual moments. For example, the scene in which Agathe opens the box and shares it with the four, is both stylistically and substantively beautiful (the close-up of the mother herself in particular, in which only the eyes are sharp). Unfortunately, I often can't do much with the characters that Dolan presents to us. Again, the blame seems to be completely placed on the shoulders of the older brother, but there is no proper psychological embedding of this.

Nevertheless, you will be amazed at Dolans antics for the full playing time. Also how he sometimes ruins beautiful pictures by just leaving his feet out of the picture or something, I find that refreshing. Not that convulsive beautiful film making that is sometimes propagated. With film it is about what the images convey and what is most effective for that purpose, not whether you want to hang each frame as a painting in your room. This 'aesthetic ruining' also regularly applies to Dolan's added music, which he can, for example, just cut off.

Only Mommy and then I'm there.

Of all the 4 Dolan movies I have, I wanted to watch this one first. A genius film: well thought out, gloomy, mysterious, goosebumps, you feel tension, expectation, something bad is about to happen... Dead animals are more often used to announce impending doom, death and destruction. And Sarah was called in as part of the psychological warfare, grandiose! Why not run sooner? Known from psychology..... caught in an abusive relationship, justifying crimes, sometimes even glorifying the perpetrator. Francis looks good, you even start to feel sympathy for him..... Yes, really a top movie, when you consider that a relatively young lad did this anyway!!

Just my third Dolan. Not that the man has already made so many films in his still young career. Too bad he's seen it all a bit now. Hopefully he will soon find new courage to face it.

A rather strange film about a man who goes to his friend's funeral. The relationship between them was not public and the mother has no clue who he actually is. Just 'a' friend, not 'the' friend. No, she is under the impression that her son had a relationship with Sarah. Sarah who, of all things, was not present at the funeral. The other son and therefore the brother of the deceased, knows the secret and does not fail to unload his verbal and physical aggression on Tom.

Some nice scenes here and there. I especially liked the contacts with the mother. Uncomfortable too and those scenes climaxed when a fake Sarah shows up. Not a masterpiece for me, but more than decent.
