"Four walls. One faith. No identity."
Ireland, 1939. William Franklin (Aidan Quinn) is appointed a teacher at St-Judes reform school after fighting on the communist side in the Spanish Civil War. His class is portrayed to him as a bunch of bums, doomed to go astray for the rest of their lives. The compassion and patience William shows for his students is in stark contrast to the heavy-handed methods employed by other educators, led by the priest John (Iain Glen), a ruthless man.
