Nice film in which a Jewish boxer tries to find his loved one after the war. Based on a true story linked to the Second World War, this one falls into the category: it's all been seen before. Plenty of good scenes in themselves, but the film as a whole lacks some focus and is quite slow. Ben Foster does well in the title role, but his accent comes across as a bit forced.

Raging Bull meets Schindler's List? Just a little bit!

Good biographical drama about a Jew, Harry Haft, who survived the Holocaust by boxing for the Germans in the concentration camp. Please note, this is not a war drama because the story mainly takes place about five years after the end of the war. Haft is played by a very convincing Ben Foster, whose role is strongly reminiscent of Robert De Niro and also seems inspired by him. Haft is broken by the many traumas he carries with him, making it difficult for him to move on through life in a normal way. In between, some of his memories in Auschwitz are shown in black and white scenes. These are immediately among the strongest scenes of the film. A compelling film with brutal boxing matches and tragic events. The tragedy in this story did not leave me unmoved. Personally, I also loved the ending.

For five years, Polish-Jewish Harry Haft [Ben Foster] managed to survive Auschwitz by making an alliance with Nazi officer Schneider [Billy Magnussen]. Schneider offers Harry protection as long as he can win the boxing matches against other prisoners. Every fight is one of life and death: the loser is executed or gassed immediately afterwards. After the war, Harry starts a career as a professional boxer and even challenges the legendary Rocky Marciano [Anthony Molinari], but he mainly struggles with his war traumas and his guilt over the deaths of his opponents in Auschwitz. A startling true story in which Levinson uses every means to maximize the horror about events in Auschwitz and the officers. Foster would have been a great choice for the title role, if he were less reminiscent of Robert De Niro in Raging Bull. With all good will, this boxing drama cannot withstand that comparison.
